Outdoor Warning Siren Testing

The City of Lavon conducts full volume tests of its Outdoor Warning System the 1st Wednesday of each month at 2:00PM, weather permitting, The system is designed to alert those engaging in /outdoor/ activity that an emergency situation is expected to directly impact Lavon, and to immediately seek shelter indoors to find out more information. This can include local TV or radio news, or NOAA Weather Radio. Weather radios can be purchased from local and online retailers at a reasonable cost. Sirens will not be tested if inclement weather is present or forecasted to be in the area.

Outdoor Warning Siren (OSW) Activation Guidelines

Although communities vary specific criteria for activating OWS, there are some commonalities in determining activation guidelines.

The following are standardized activation guidelines.

  • The National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning for Lavon or the immediate area, or a tornado in progress is confirmed by Lavon first responders or trained weather spotters
  • The National Weather Service issues a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Lavon or the immediate area with the primary hazards listed as winds in excess of 70MPH and/or hail 1.25″ in diameter or greater.
  • Other natural or manmade emergencies as directed by City Officials or Civil Defense-Emergency Management
